so, we just had a referendum here in Kenya to vote on a proposed constitution. i felt that it was a decent constitution, although if i was allowed to vote and felt that it was my place to do so, i would have voted no due to a few sections that were, in my opinion, complete bologna...
anyway, it was a crazy few months because the banana people (pro-proposed constitution) and the orange people (anti-proposed constitution) were fighting, rallying, burning cars, and worst of all, writing crappy articles in the paper. it would have been annoying if it wasn't so funny that the opposing sides referred to themselves as different types of fruit and those trying to make peace kept talking about making a fruit salad...yeah, that was strange for me.
i really thought the bananas had it, but in the end the oranges triumphed and the bananas went home bruised. the votes aligned themselves according to tribal lines, which has caused some tension, and the president recently fired his whole cabinet...we're waiting to hear who he's got lined up to replace them (oranges, bananas, mango, kiwi???) who knows?
we also had an earthquake here, which damaged a few buildings downtown. i have to admit i am disappointed that i didn't even feel the quake. i remember my dad saying he felt a quake in the middle of the night when i was younger, and i always felt jaded for not feeling it myself. now, east africa has a quake over 6 on the richter scale and i am still oblivious. oh well...
